Players’ association says teams acted in concert to not sign Bonds

NEW YORK — The baseball players’ union says it has found evidence teams acted in concert against signing Barry Bonds but it reached an agreement with the commissioner’s office to delay the filing of any grievance.

The union expressed concern in May about the lack of offers to the home run king. Filing a grievance would trigger proceedings before arbitrator Shyam Das.

9-year-old boy banned from pitching because he’s too good

9-year-old Jericho Scott from New Haven, Connecticut is a really good baseball player. In fact, he’s too good that he’s no longer allowed to pitch in his youth baseball league.

The action is all you need to know. This is one of the dumbest, saddest things I have ever seen in my life. So because this kid is so dominant, that no one can beat him, they decide to beat him by banning him? BRILLIANT LOGIC!! Is this where we’re at in society today? Banning someone because he is too good? When someone is gifted like this, isn’t it in everyone’s best interests to further those gifts? What good is this going to do for the kid? What if this kid is a future MLB Superstar, the next Randy Johnson or Greg Maddux or Tommy John or Cy Young or some other 300 game winner, pitching legend? Why are we denying him that chance? What is moving him up and letting him get battered by kids older than him going to do? It will destroy him, scar him for life. What if this was done to Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, and all the other great sporting legends we have?

Scott’s mom is taking legal action against the league. I fully support her doing so. I hope she kicks their ass and the people who decided to ban this kid are looking at the help wanted ads when she is done with those scumbags. This makes me want to puke

A Cubbie Occurrence that doesn’t happen on the North Side

Who knew that pulling yourself up the dugout bench could lead to injury? That sounds like a Cubbie Occurrence. Only it didn’t happen to the Cubs. Just ask Jered Weaver of the LA Angels, and he can tell you all about it

“I went to push to get up and gripped where the staples in the upholstery come together, and it just got me. It sliced me pretty good. It felt like a paper cut, but a lot deeper.”

Thankfully, the cuts Weaver suffered to the tips of his middle and ring fingers will not require stitches, and he won’t be out for an extended period of time, but he will miss his next start. And thankfully the Angels can afford it, as they are running away with the AL West.

Yankees eject fan for trying to answer nature during God Bless America

Even though this story was posted last week, I saw this headline while I was checking my email, and I found this story a little odd. Apparently, having to urinate in the latrine hole during God Bless America at Yankee Stadium is not allowed, and because of it, Bradford Campeau-Laurion of Queens who was ejected from a Yankees game for having to go is now considering legal action against the Yuckies.

When he tried leaving his seat, the po-po said he had to wait until the song was over.

“I then said to him, ‘I don’t care about God Bless America. I just need to use the bathroom.’ As soon as I said that, he immediately pinned my arm behind my back. He shoved me out the front gate and told me get out of their country if I didn’t like it.”

It turns out that the Yankees do have such a rule, and it is enforced by ushers, stadium security, and the po-po. However, the New York Civil Liberties Union says it’s unconstitutional:

“Because they are enforcing a rule of that imposes political correctness through refusing to let somebody go to bathroom while a patriotic song is playing, that violates Constitutional rights,” said Donna Lieberman, a spokesperson for the NYCLU.

Of course the po-po spun it and painted Campeau-Laurion as the bad guy, saying

“The officers observed a male standing on his seat, cursing, using inappropriate language and acting in a disorderly manner while reeking of alcohol, and decided to eject him rather than subject others to his offensive behavior.”

Right. I believe the po-po. He was drunk, cursing, and acting disorderly. Just like a bunch of other fans do at the game. This is definitely one of those NWA Fuck tha Police moments. Amazing that in the year 2008, in the United States of America, where we have freedom of speech, when duty calls, we can’t answer if we’re at Yankee Stadium and they are playing God Bless America. Note to self: When at Yankee Stadium, don’t urinate during God Bless America, even if it means my bladder will explode. I hope this man sues the pants of the Yuckies and wins.

Rodriguez K’s on 4-2 pitch

Who knew such brain farts happened in MLB? Apparently, thanks to Sean Rodriguez’s brain fart, now we know that these things can happen.

With the LA Angels leading the Detroit Tigers 6-0 on their way to a 7-1 win, Angels second baseman Sean Rodriguez struck out on a 4-2 pitch. Apparently, the home-plate umpire had reset the count to 1-2 after the scoreboard read 2-2, which he thought was wrong, when in fact it was correct. Upon the reset, Rodriguez took 2 more balls to run the count full, when he should have walked. He then struck out.

Because the Angels did not catch the mistake, there was no course for appeal, not that LA would have needed to anyways, with them winning 7-1. As Mike Scioscia said, that’s embarrassing. Yes, it is embarrassing. Not only is it embarrassing, but it could be boneheaded. What if that was a tight spot in the playoffs with the game on the line, and this brain fart ended up costing you the game? Losing focus during the game is unacceptable.

Reds trade Adam Dunn to Diamondbacks

2 weeks after trading Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox, the Cincinnati Reds continued their fire sale, sending Adam Dunn to the Arizona Diamondbacks in return for prospects.

Arizona has a 1.5 game lead on the Dodgers right now, and with LA getting Manny Ramirez at the trade deadline, this should counter that move. Despite the low batting average of Adam Dunn, the free agent to be this winter, he is among one of the most disciplined hitters in the game, despite his high strikeout total, which is the result of him having a massive power swing, and the fact that he goes into a lot of deep counts, evidenced by him being among the leaders in pitches seen per plate appearance.

Gary Sheffield is an idiot

Recently, Detroit Tigers OF/DH Gary Sheffield complained about not playing in the field, and not playing everyday, saying

“I can be in the outfield and play every day. I don’t want to DH. I don’t feel like a baseball player when I DH. I don’t know how to be the leader that I am from the bench. I can’t be a vocal leader. I can’t talk to guys from the bench because I don’t feel right about it.

“I’m in a role now where I don’t know what to do, really. The guys are out there busting their butt for nine innings, they come in and they hit and they grind. I just sit down and hit. That’s all I do, so I can’t be in a leadership role from that position.”

What an idiotic statement from Sheffield. As Manager Jim Leyland pointed out, shoulder injuries have limited his time, and one of the conditions of Sheffield accepting the trade to the Tigers from the Yankees was being a DH, saying

“I told him that all I had here for him was a DH. If he did not want to accept that, do not accept the trade. I’m still confused by the article because it talks about ‘platoon doesn’t set well.’ Gary Sheffield never platooned here.

“Platoon is when you have a left-hand hitter and a right-hand hitter. One plays against right-hand pitching and one plays against left-hand pitching. That is a platoon.”

Leyland said Sheffield played in 39 of 51 games before going on the disabled list in May and played in 36 of the last 43 games, entering Monday’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.

“Anybody that has a brain knows that’s not a platoon.”

After reading the article, I must say that I agree with Jim Leyland here. What an idiotic statement from Gary Sheffield. No wonder people hate this scumbag.

Evan Longoria on DL with broken wrist

First Carl Crawford goes on the DL. Now Evan Longoria goes on the DL. This is not good for Tampa, 2 integral parts to their first place team on the DL. With 71 wins and a 4.5 game lead on the Boston Red Sox, this would have been an uphill climb even with them healthy. That climb just got a little steeper. Crawford, was batting .273 with 57 RBIs and 25 steals, went on the DL with a right hand injury on Sunday, and might face season-ending surgery. Longoria, who began the season in the minors, was hitting .278 with a team rookie-record 22 home runs and 71 RBIs. He went on the DL when he was hit by a pitch on the wrist. The mettle of Tampa will be tested over these final 2 months

4 suspended, fined for brawl

On Tuesday, MLB suspended Kansas City Royals catcher Miguel Olivo and pitcher Zack Greinke for five games for their actions during a brawl during a Sunday game with the Chicago White Sox.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was suspended two games and Royals manager Trey Hillman was given one game. All four were also fined. Hillman served his on Tuesday, per MLB rules, as managers and coaches are not allowed to appeal suspensions. Ozzie Guillen served the first game on Tuesday, and will serve the second game tonight. Olivo and Greinke appealed their suspensions, which will allow them to play until an appeal is heard.

I am outraged by the rulings. MLB is being way too excessive with Olivo and Greinke and way too light with the White Sox. Why wasn’t D.J. Carrasco suspended either? I don’t buy the excuse from the umpire that it wasn’t intentional. He threw at Olivo’s head twice. And what about Ozzie and his remarks after the game that he has admitted to ordering his pitchers to hit batters before and the fact that he said he will do it again? MLB really needs to give Guillen a very harsh penalty. This guy has gone off on the umpires before, he called Mariotti a homosexual term, and has admitted to ordering his pitchers to hit batters.

Snakes sign Haren to 4-year extension

All-Star pitcher Dan Haren and the Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms on a 4-year extension, a contract which will pay Haren $44.75 million through the 2012 season, and a club option for 2013. With Haren locked up, now the Diamondbacks can turn their attention to their other ace Brandon Webb and locking him up to give the Snakes a potent 1-2 punch for many years down the road.
